Ford Figo Aspire Overview
The Figo Aspire is Ford’s first crack at a four-metre sedan market in India. Right from the start, the latest Ford has its work cut out. Up against well-entrenched competition like the Maruti Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Tata Zest the Aspire will have to be really good to make an impression, and Ford knows this. The American carmaker, however, is quietly confident it’s come up with something special enough for the task at hand. Some of that confidence stems from the fact that the Aspire is much better suited to Indian conditions than any Ford before it. Unlike many of its predecessors, this car has been engineered from scratch – and not just adapted – for customers in developing markets like India and Brazil, where much of the developmental work on the car was done. Catch a glimpse of the Aspire’s nose and you can’t help but be impressed by the clean, crisp lines. The Aston Martin-like look really does work well and the headlamps and heavily chromed grille further embellish the looks. Helping here are some sharp-looking cut lines on the bonnet and the fairly aggressive chin.
Ford Figo Aspire Design & Style
The compact sedan segment generally has cars which look like more of a compromise. Good looks takes a back seat here. Thats not the cars with the Ford Figo Aspire, though. This one is a very good looking car. The Ford Figo Aspire is based on Ford’s Kinetic Design 2.0. The bonnet or boot are neither too long nor short. The front design is similar to other new Fords like the Fiesta and Mondeo. There is a prominent swag line that runs across the car. The glass area is small so the car looks larger. This also makes it look well balanced and not too tall. The boot design too is good with a chrome strip that is well proportionate. Its not too flashy not too thin. The car looks premium ever from the rear.
Ford Figo Aspire Cabin & Comfort
Step inside and one is greeted by a stylish interior. The dashboard seems familiar because the design theme is similar to the EcoSport. The steering wheel, centre console and information screen look very similarto the EcoSport and Fiesta. There are dual-tone black/beige dash and beige seats and door pads. Depending on the variant, there’s either gloss black or silver finished inserts.
There are controls on the steering wheel too. The light blue backlit instrument cluster is pleasant looking but the dials could have been slightly larger. The air vents in the side are circular and feature chrome detailing in the top variant. Headlamp switches are new and placed below the driver side air vent. The boot release button is also placed next to it and is easy to access. The auto climate control switches feel premium and are well detailed. Quality as well as fit are good and are improved over the EcoSport
Ford claims there are as many as 20 storage points inside the car. There’s a storage point on the side of the dashboard that can be accessed when the door is open. Door mounted bottle holders are large and can accommodate more than one bottle if needed.
The seats are comfortable and even feature leather upholstery (first in segment). There is good support up front but the rear seats could have offered more support and could have been madelarger. The rear kneeroom isn’t best in segment but is still very impressive. The front seats have been scooped out to maximize room at the rear. Shoulder room isn’t a lot, so three adults in the back can be a squeeze. The floor isn’t fully flat too so it is good only for two adults. A rear armrest is also offered.Boot space at 359 litres isn’t as much as the Amaze or the Xcent but it is quite usable. The loading height is good and the boot is deep too.
Ford Figo Aspire Engine & Transmission
There are three engines to choose from in the Ford Figo Aspire. First is the 1.2-litre petrol that churns out 87bhp of power and 112Nm and comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission. This engine is ideal for city driving, while for highway it is just fine if you want to cruise. The punch from the engine comes after 3000rpm and keep it above that if you want to extract the best performance.
The Ford Figo Aspire’s second engine is the 1.5-litre petrol. This engine comes only with a six-speed DCT (dual clutch transmission). Simply put, it is a high-end automatic transmission. This is quite a powerful engine and is fun to drive in a spirited fashion. It is very responsive and will satisfy those looking for extra performance with the convenience of an automatic.
The third engine is the 1.5-litre diesel that produces 98bhp of power and 215Nm of torque. This engine of the Ford Figo Aspire has been tuned for better performance, however, there is still some amount of turbo lag. This is the perfect engine be it city or highway driving. This is the best engine of the lot and we will recommend this for performance and even fuel efficiency
The diesel is certainly our pick of lot and it has a good mid-range, at low rpms it struggles to pull. The sweet spot for this engine is between 2000-3500rpm. The diesel will return about 15-17km/l in city. The Ford Figo Aspire has good suspension set-up. At the rear it is softer than the front and so the rear has still decent ride. The handling of the Ford Figo Aspire is one of the best-in-class and even the electric power steering is light and easy to drive in city and even on the highway.
Ford Figo Aspire Driving Dynamics
When it comes to ride and handling, comfort is clearly a focus area with the Aspire. The suspension is quite plush and absorbent and bumps are ridden over so well that you stop paying attention to every pimple on the road and makes driving a bit more relaxed. On really bad sections of road, the ride does get a bit jiggly and bouncy, which is when you detect a hint of stiffness, but that’s only to be expected. What makes ride quality even nicer is that the suspension works quite silently for the most part. For information on contact details of Ford car dealers in Chennai
Yes, it does mildly enjoy being driven hard and responds better the more you load up the suspension. But, that effortless grip, unimpeachable confidence and precise steering you get on Fords like the Fiesta is missing here. There’s a strange looseness in the steering around the straight ahead position it doesn’t have the same agility as other Fords and body roll is ever-present. The petrol version is the better of the two Aspires in the corners with a touch more on-centre steering feel and correspondingly a greater feeling of connection with the car. The brakes on both petrol and diesel Aspires, however, inspire tremendous confidence; stopping power was impressive as well and that lends a lot to the overall driving experience.
Ford Figo Aspire Safety Features
Ford has given special attention to the safety of the occupants inside and thus the new sedan comes with robust passenger cage created from high-strength steel, both driver and passenger side airbags and for the first time in the history of Indian auto industry Ford has even provided side and curtain airbags for the occupants as an option. The top end trims also gets ABS and EBD and also hill assist which is available only with the auto transmission variant though.

Ford Figo Aspire Bottomline
Lot of thought has gone into development of the Figo Aspire; it might not excel at a specific thing, but is a superb overall package. It looks decent, offers plenty of cabin space, scores REALLY high on safety, beats the competition on performance and has a decent ride and handling package. It does miss out on few features, but I don’t mind missing out if Ford manages to price this competitively. The price then becomes an important factor in deciding the fate of this product. Ford is expected to launch the car and start deliveries in the next three to four weeks and if you are looking at buying a compact sedan or any car under Rs 9 lakh, it makes sense to wait for a month to check this out.
