BMW X6 Design & style
Outlandish is the first world that your brain churns when you see the new BMW X6M. The grand proportions of muscles and contours flowing all over this jacked up coupe inspired vehicle ditch the conventionally boring straights and squares of an orthodox SUV design.Bold and brash is the front profile with large headlights further accentuating its menacing presence. The larger kidney grille gets a bright surround and also features vertical slats along with a camera nicely slotted under the model label. The long and contoured hood features character lines that drop a hint of the beasty of a motor underneath it. The front bumper looks interestingly complicated with multiple scoops and fog lamps. These air pockets lend a visual appeal for sure as they look capable of swallowing a hatchback but also offer functional value to help cool the motor inside.
While the front face is similar to that of the X5M, the X6M is a tad wider in profile. However, the similarities end at the face itself because when you see the X6M along its length, it looks like no other vehicle with its sloping roofline which flows in an angular way from the front before merging with the shot and butch rear. The shoulder line remains strong as it climbs all the way to the rear.It being a vehicle of larger dimensions doesn’t look bulky at all. The contrasting combination of a SUVish car with a sedan like window line gives it an amazing silhouette. BMW X6 Cabin & Comfort
The X6 is new on the inside too. Those of you familiar with BMW’s interior style sheet will find the cabin familiar. The more upright instrument binnacle, the double-deck outer vents and the more bulbous steering boss are all familiar BMW SUV details, but there’s enough new stuff to keep the cabin looking fresh. A wide band of chrome separates the top half of the dash from the lighter lower parts, detailing on the interiors is sumptuous with soft edges, and chrome highlights add to the sporty feel of the cabin.
The new cabin also gets a much more useable rear seat, with better support and space. You can now seat three abreast in comfort. The new X6 also gets a pair of neatly trimmed kneepads for the driver. They flank the centre console to provide supportive leg-bracing when the cornering forces get large, preventing that typical pain in the knee you experience on hard driving.
Under the skin, the X6 M50d is also pretty special. Despite being one step down from a full M car, it gets plenty of bespoke hardware that makes it feel extra special from behind the wheel. The chassis of the standard car is a bit stiffer than the outgoing one. In addition, this full-time four-wheel-drive X6 also gets the so-called adaptive M Sport suspension, which firms up considerably in the Sport mode. Add in a dynamic pack and you also get active roll control and a rear axle that distributes the engine’s power to the rear wheel with the most grip.

Under the hood sits BMW’s most recent gem — a smooth, free-revving diesel six with not one, not two, but three turbos! The M50d’s 3.0-litre, triple-turbo straight-six produces 381bhp and commercial vehicle-like torque of 75.45kgm. All this is achieved because BMW has reduced the compression ratio of this diesel to just 16:1, really low considering few petrols nowadays come with a 12:1 ratio. The lower compression allows for greater ‘fill’ from the three turbos at maximum boost, and BMW has made sure injection pressure is good enough to supply plenty of diesel. The M50d’s injection pressure is upped to a really high 2,200bar when the engine is running at max speed.
How do the three turbos work together? To begin with, a small variable-geometry turbo comes in at low revs. This allows for fast responses and a reduction in lag as the light turbo is easy to spool up even with a small tap on the throttle. There is a hint of lag as you take off, but the quick eight-speed gearbox ratios help you overcome this in a jiffy. The larger main turbo joins the fray at just 1,500rpm, and takes responsibility for most of the meaty midrange. So, after 2,000rpm, responses are massive and explosive bursts of acceleration are just a flex of your right foot away. The third turbo is small again and chimes in at approximately 2,600rpm, helping give the mid range a boost. The best bit is that the turbos overlap so smoothly, you really need to pay attention to notice where each comes in, especially if you accelerate flat out in one long seamless pull all the way to 5,600rpm.
As a result, the X6 M50d is really quick. This 2.2-tonne SUV does 0-100 in an insane 5.3 seconds, and that’s just the start of it. And the manic pull in the higher gears simply has to be experienced. The motor delivers huge thrust from 2,000rpm to 5,000rpm, and the manner in which it progresses up the powerband is so undiesel-like, you almost forget it is one. Yes, it growls like a diesel in the midrange under load and there’s a hint of clatter too, but there’s also a nice snarl in the top end that sounds just great. At speed, the X6’s most remarkable feature is its near-petrol-like hush.If the road below is broken or full of ruts, you might hear the suspension, and the odd large bump does upset the composure of the car on its huge 19-inch wheels. So ride is unlikely to be a strength of this car when it comes to India. That said, the ride of the new X6 is better than that of the earlier car by a considerable margin; the latter thumped and bumped over even mildly undulating roads.
Once the beast is rolling, you can’t help but concentrate all your senses on the steering wheel and the road ahead, provided you want to test the true potential of this monster. The steering input is direct and it can be further improved by altering the setting on the console. It drives like a proper performance car on auto settings but it is only when all the M-spec modes are switched on, tweaking the performance characteristics of the X6M, that you understand and feel what this car is capable of doing.
Now that all modes were switched on, even a gentle dash on the throttle pulled me behind completely and , it seemed like all the wheels conspired to teach me a lesson and started burning the tarmac. Even at initial speeds, the motor offers so much of performance that you need to be careful of the things ahead. Luckily for us, we had the race track as a playground to test the extreme capacities of the X6M.The V8 of a motor is on its toes all the time and is eager to eat on more and more distance at the smallest possible time. On straight sections, the ride feels extremely planted as the Pirellis do a great job of gripping the tarmac. While everything is good about these sleek tyres, they aren’t the best when it comes to absorbing the roughness of the tarmac as the low profile tyres are meant only to enjoy high speed. The ride quality is equally confident while taking sharp turns at great speeds. Aiding that are the huge multi piston motorsport brakes which offer extreme bite making the vehicle come to a halt as and when required.

Clearly, the BMW X6M is not meant for everyone as there would be some acting cynical about the way it looks but there exists a sizeable audience who are in love with this spruced up SUV. Call it names like Sports Activity Coupe and what not but the only way to really connect with this car is by referring it as The Hulk. Till the time you don’t tease it, the X6M is calm and will try and act obedient but the moment you manage to get it angry, it unleashed its real self and that is where you realize what 750Nm thrown through all wheels mean.Kindly do not confuse it for anything else as the X6M will not see much of off-road but more of smooth sailing tarmac.
